CTWS Exam Scoring

How Is The Test Scored?

Your performance on the test will be measured against a predetermined standard of knowledge. This standard is the basic level of knowledge that, in CTS's sole opinion, can reasonably be expected of individuals with basic competence in technical writing. You will NOT be measured against the performance of the other individuals taking the test. This means that if everyone who takes the test meets the knowledge standard, everyone will pass.

The passing score for the CTWS test is set by CTS. CTS reviews each test question and sets a reasonable threshold based on overall test difficulty. These judgments, in aggregate, determine the passing score. Procedures will be in place to protect the security of the exam before, during, and after the administration of the exam.

What Information Will I Receive About My Score?

The examination is designed to distinguish those who possess the tested level of knowledge and skills from those who do not. There is no evidence that someone who receives a particularly high score on the test will perform significantly better on the job than someone whose score falls exactly at the passing point.

Therefore, if you PASS the test, you will be informed only that you have successfully completed the credentialing process. You will NOT be notified of your actual score.

If you FAIL the test, you WILL be notified of your score and the minimum score required to pass. This information is provided to assist you in deciding whether to retake the test and how to plan your preparation efforts for future tests.

When Will I Receive My Test Results?

CTS will email the test results approximately two weeks after the test. TO PROTECT THE CONFIDENTIALITY OF YOUR TEST RESULTS, NO RESULTS WILL BE GIVEN OVER THE TELEPHONE. The results will be provided only to the examinee.

How Can I Cancel My Scores?

If, for any reason, you decide that you want to cancel your score, you may write to CTS requesting cancellation of your scores. Your written request must be signed and be received within five days after the date of the test.

If your score is cancelled, CTS will not maintain a record of your test results. No refunds will be given for score cancellations. To retake the test after a score cancellation, a new application and fee must be submitted and you must meet all eligibility requirements in effect at the time of the application, including but not limited to the exam retake policy delineated in the candidate handbook.
